THE COMPANY
During the summer of 2018 four circus artists set sail in the Swedish archipelago. When they came back to shore, the dream of Below Zero had come to life.
Below Zero is a Swedish circus company that is doing modern and innovative circus arts performances. The company’s first piece PACE got high praise after it’s premiere in 2019 and since the company is going further, growing bigger with their second piece; KORUS which premiered in spring of 2022. In the summer of 2023 the company premiered it’s third piece and first outside performance: RAAF.
The first Scandinavian high-wire performance, ever.
The cold weather of Sweden shapes the company’s artistic expression as creating warmth and human contact in many ways characterises Below Zero.
The company’s name is inspired by the circus artists ability to look weightless in their actions, flying almost like falling snowflakes, time can seem to be frozen and weight non-existing.
Below Zero was founded by four individuals with a similar past but entirely different careers.
Even though Below Zero is based in Stockholm, we work globally.
WHO ARE WE?
Klara Sköldulf Philipp- Artistic Leader and artist in RAAF and KORUS
Klara grew up in Stockholm and found circus at the early age of seven. She was a stubborn and patient child and she got obsessed with trying to find the balance on a 10 mm metal wire. Since then she just couldn't let go of it. She studied circus at DOCH in Stockholm and in Copenhagen, Denmark specializing in wire dancing. She enriched her practice exploring site specifik performance and political performing arts. Klara is combining poetical, visual universes, technical skills and a grounded, groovy movement style on the wire.
Klara is one of four foundation stones laid in the creation of Below Zero.
Axel Ahl - Artistic leader and artist in PACE and KORUS
Axel grew up on the Swedish country side and found love for stage art performances in his early life. He loved it all, acting, dancing, musical theatre and concerts. At fourteen years old he saw his first contemporary circus show and fell in love with the art form. Since then, he’s dedicated his life to explore the art that is contemporary circus. After studying Circus for four years he decided to get the working experience that no school can offer and has since worked for a lot of different companies.
His personal artistry is one of the four backbones creating Below Zero.
Sara Sanchez Runsten - Artistic leader and artist in PACE and KORUS
Sara grew up in the suburbs of Stockholm. With a multi-cultural family it’s not surprising that she has a broad view on the arts. She started practice circus at thirteen years old when the lack of creative thinking in sports disappointed her, and since then her creative process has been on going. After studying at Cirkusgymnasiet, the contemporary dance program in Löftadalen and the BA program at DOCH she started working with a lot of different companies such as Cirkus Cirkör, Clowns without borders and Pantomimteatern.
Her personal artistry is now one of the four pillars of Below Zero.
